Caswell District Banquet

The Boy Scouts of America recently held its annual banquet to honor their volunteers in the Caswell District. The Caswell District consists of Lenoir and Greene Counties and serves nearly 900 Cub and Boy Scouts. This banquet was held at King’s Restaurant and was well attended by more than 200 Scouts, parents and volunteers. Scouting is an organization driven by volunteers with their time and talents willing to help support the growth and development of young men and boys. Boys can begin in Scouting as young as six years old until the age of 18. From Tiger Cub to Eagle Scout the Scouting Trail is filled with wonderful volunteers who make this journey into manhood possible by teaching the values of character, duty to God and duty to Country. At this annual Banquet we honor the leaders and volunteers of Caswell District as well as Scouts that have achieved God and Country Awards and the Rank of Eagle Scout.

The Banquet was called to order by Billy Rouse, District Chairman and the crowd enjoyed their meal blessed by Haywood Smith, pastor at Westminster United Methodist Church. The new Caswell District Executive, LaMarr Walker gave a report on the State of the District. The report stated that the District had recruited 178 Cub Scouts for 2006 and met their annual Friends of Scouting goal set at $84,000. In the District this year there were also 5 new Learning for Life programs started in the school system. Through Scouting in the Caswell District we are serving more than 1600 girls and boys through Scouting programs.

Through Cub and Boy Scouts, the youth of the Caswell District grow in character and responsibility developing a strong sense of duty to God and Country while learning outdoor and lifelong skills. At our Banquet Dr. Jack Harrell honors those Scouts achieving a God and Country Award for that year and those young men reaching the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle. This year we had the most God and Country recipients the Caswell District has ever had with 100. Each young man was called and presented with a mug by Dr. Harrell. The Eagle Class of 2006 was 29 strong. Those young men were also honored by Dr. Harrell with a mug to commemorate their achievements. The Chris Keel Award was presented to the one Eagle Scout whose character best exemplifies the qualities of Scouting. That Scout was Patrick Duff from Troop 241.

The District Volunteers that were honored included Cub Master of the Year, David Jones of Pack 392, Cub Den Leader, Richard Holmes Pack 244, Scout Master of the Year, Bob Smith of Troop 63, Assistant Scout Master of the Year, Jerry Eubanks of Troop 114 and Scout Unit Committee Person, Paul Scarborough of Pack 41. Caswell District also had two District Award of Merit honorees that night. Mike Lewis and Karin Barrow were both honored for all their hard work and dedication to the youth of Caswell District. This award is the highest honor given at the District level to a volunteer. Johnny Hewitt was also presented a special gift by the District to recognize his many years of service to Scouting, most recently serving as the District Commissioner.

To end the evening the District presented James E. West Fellowships. They were given in memory of three individuals who had a significant impact on Scouting at Troop 41 and Gordon St. Christian Church. Those honored were Ashton Rhodes, Allan Heath and Allen G. Walter. The Awards were accepted by their families.

Scouting in Lenoir and Greene Counties has always been supported by wonderful volunteers who make this a quality program for the youth of our communities. The District would like to thank all of the 397 volunteers who week in and week out help to make this happen.
